The M1 helmet, also known as a "steel pot" or "tin-hat", was the standard combat helmet for the US military from 1941 to the late 1980s. It was a redesign of the M1917 helmet, with a shape that fit around the wearer's head for better protection from shrapnel and falls. The M1 was made from Hadfield Manganese steel and weighed 2.25 lbs. It wasn't designed to stop bullets, but proved effective on the battlefield.
