During World War II, the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) used specialized 5-gallon steel fuel and water cans based on the German "jerry can" design. Unlike standard U.S. Army cans, Marine-issued cans featured the distinctive German-style cam-lever quick-release lid instead of a screw cap.
- USMC Markings: Authentic Marine cans are stamped with USMC along the lower side of the body.
- Bottom Stampings: The bottom of the can typically displayed three lines of information: the standard it conforms to, the manufacturer's initials, and a production date (e.g., "20-5-44" meaning 20 Liters / 5 Gallons, manufactured in 1944).
- G and Water Stampings: Fuel cans often had a large "G" stamped on both sides, while water cans were clearly marked with "WATER"
